Frequently asked questions about the information center

Here is a list of information center questions and answers. The term topic collection refers to a group of related pages in the information center. If you have a question that is not on this page, please contact us.

How do I print an information center topic collection and all of its subtopics without having to select each subtopic?

All of the topic collections in the information center are available as PDFs.

To print a topic collection, do the following:

• From the navigation bar:
  1. Navigate to the topic collection that you want to print.
  2. Click Printable PDF and follow the instructions on that page.

• From the information center home page, click Printable PDFs and follow the instructions on that page.

How do I conduct a search that will return what I am looking for?
The search function is located in the top left of the information center. The search is a full-text search.

Type key words for a general search. For example, type the following search terms to find all the topics that contain both or either of the two words partition and logical:

partition logical

You can also search for an exact phrase by entering that phrase in quotation marks. For example, type the following phrase to find only those topics that contain the word logical immediately followed by partition:

"logical partition"

For best results, try the following:

• Use Boolean searches. For example: activate AND processor
• Use quotation marks to search for an exact string. For example: "data migration"
• Use more words in the search string to narrow your search.
• Use fewer words in the search string to broaden your search.
• See the help information for the search function for more suggestions and tips.

How do I bookmark a Web page in the information center?
To bookmark a Web page within a frame, follow these steps:

1. Right-click anywhere in the frame that you want to bookmark. A shortcut or pop-up menu opens.
2. If you are using Microsoft^(R) Internet Explorer, click Add to Favorites. You might want to retitle the bookmarked page. Otherwise, you will replace any previous information center bookmarks.
3. If you are using Netscape Navigator, click Add Bookmark.

Is there a way to easily move from one topic collection to another in the navigation window?
Yes. You can collapse one topic when you move to a new topic by customizing the interface.

To customize this function of the the interface, follow these steps:

1. Click the Customize interface icon in the toolbar.
2. Select Close current branch in the Customization window.
3. Click Save.

What is the trail at the top of the content frame? Can I make it disappear? Can I make it show more?
The trail at the top of the content frame is your navigation trail, sometimes called a "branch." It shows your path through the information center.

To hide the navigation trail or to make it show more levels, follow these steps:

1. Click the Customize interface icon in the toolbar.
2. Select how many items you want to see in the navigation trail box.
3. Click Save.

Why does the navigation bar not display? Why is the navigation bar unreadable? Why are buttons on the interface not working correctly? Why aren't my PDF links working?
Several releases of the Java^(TM) Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Virtual Machine (JVM) contain bugs that seriously affect the performance of the information center. For this reason, we are unable to support any information centers that are running under one of the following releases of the JRE:

• Sun 1.4.2_04: Locks up Internet Explorer on several operations; PDF links are broken under some configurations
• Sun 1.4.2_01, 1.4.2_02, 1.4.2_03, 1.4.2_04: Locks up Netscape browsers on several operations
• Sun 1.3.1_07, 1.3.1_08, 1.3.1_09, 1.4.0, 1.4.0_01, 1.4.0_02, 1.4.0_03, 1.4.0_04: Does not display the navigation bar
• Microsoft JVM: Corrupts the navigation bar when running on a DBCS system; PDF links broken under some configurations

Upgrading to a fully supported version of the JVM should correct these problems.

To upgrade to a fully supported version of the JVM, do the following:

1. Download a fully supported version of the Java Plug-in at: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/jre/javaplugin.exe.
2. After you install an updated version, ensure that your browser is using the Java Plug-in. You are prompted during the installation of the plug-in, but you can also change the settings for the plug-in by using the Java Plug-in entry in the Control Panel.

Is there an easy way to make the content frame larger?
To make the content frame larger, do one of the following:

• Collapse the left navigation bar by clicking the icon located above the navigation bar. To reopen the navigation bar, click the icon located at the upper left of the content frame.
• Alternatively, if you are using Netscape Navigator, you can right-click in the content frame and select Open Frame in New Window.

How do I view the information center in a different language?
To view the information center in a different language, do one of the following:

• From anywhere in the information center:
  1. Click the Select language icon in the toolbar.
  2. Select a geographic area.
  3. Click the language you want.
• Go to the IBM^{(R) (R)} Information Center entry page .
  1. Select a geographic area.
  2. Click the language you want.

Is it possible to use the information center when I cannot access the Internet?
Yes. You can use the information center in several ways without going online.

• The information center is preinstalled on the Hardware Management Console.
• The information center is available on the IBM eServer^(TM) Hardware Information Center CD-ROM (SK3T-8159). This CD-ROM is included with your IBM eServer hardware shipment, or you can order it separately. If you have access to the Internet and want to order a CD online, see Ordering publications from IBM.
  • You can use the CD-ROM to install part or all of the information center on your server.
  • You can install part or all of the information center on your local PC.
  • You can install part or all of the information center on a LAN.
  The installation function configures an HTTP server and search indexes so that the information center can be accessed from your intranet by any client with a browser that is enabled for Java or JavaScript^(TM).
